Is your skin actually “dry” or has it become dehydrated at the surface?
This is important, most of us have “normal skin” - this is why it’s called normal.
“Dry skin", technically, is skin which does not have enough native oils to seal in dermal moisture well because it has fewer oil producing pores. Since sealing in the moisture in our skin is one of the primary roles of our dermis, if we don’t have enough skin lipids then dermal water easily evaporates (Transdermal Water Loss or TDWL).
If the feeling of “dryness” is mostly on your face, hands and lower legs, but NOT on your torso and back, then you have normal skin which has become “dehydrated at the surface” which is caused by a number of factors including product choice, and skin care habits and routines. Scroll down for a more in-depth discussion.
Dehydrated skin is a sign of an impaired Acid Mantle (aka moisture barrier). It can easily lead to more serious skin issues over time and increase premature skin aging.
Women with a normal skin type can become “oil dry” after 50 because our skin produces significantly less oil after menopause.
A moisture rich, nutrient dense lotion like Dew Drops, used the right way, can help reduce or even resolve these issues by …
Relieving the discomfort of tight, parched skin - what we commonly call “Dry Skin” by increasing dermal moisture.
Reducing the chances of developing more serious skin disorders because skin which is parched at the surface is more easily damaged and vulnerable to penetration by disease causing microbes and environmental stress.
Reducing premature aging of the skin.
HOW TO USE:
Splash with warm water to soften and freshen the skin, and increase dermal hydration.
Pat dry, spritz with Hydrosol water (or damped your skin with water).
Apply a small amount of Dew Drops to damp skin (TIP: Applying lotion (moisturizer) to damp skin is an easy and effective way to increase dermal moisture)
Gently massage into the skin and allow to air dry.
After a few minutes minutes, apply a fragrance free mineral sunscreen, and/or makeup. I recommend Tidal Wave Organics Tinted Mineral sunscreen.
WHAT IF?
If your skin feels persistently parched, tight and dehydrated at the surface or you feel “dry" during the day, try these tricks ...
Apply Dew Drops twice!
Follow steps 1 - 4 above.
As soon as this soaks in … apply more Dew Drops. This second application is applied without the extra dampness from the hydrosol or water.
After this soaks in apply sunscreen/makeup.
Try adding a few drops of a facial oil to bump up the emollience and occlusion (sealing in) of Dew Drops (or any moisturizing lotion or cream):
Emulsify, which means blend well, 1-4 drops of a facial oil with a small amount of lotion in the palm of your hand with your finger tip. TIP: You can apply the oil on top, but by blending these together first, then gently massaging into warm damp skin instead of layering, enhances absorption of the oils.
Apply this to damp skin as described above.
I pack a lot of research and skin care goodness into my Dew Drops …
Often my customers enjoy learning more about what goes into my creations, what causes skin problems, and how to support strong, resilient skin. So here, I delve a bit deeper for your reading pleasure …
Super saturated with moisture from Aloe Vera + Steam Distilled hydrosols: When you see “water” on a label you might assume that it’s a “filler”, diluting the active ingredients in the formulation and making it less effective. And why would we want to pay for water? The short answer? The “water” is their for hydration = moisture. It is absolutely VITAL! Without it you CAN NOT hydrate/moisturize your skin! that “water” also absorbs and extracts active compounds from other ingredients making them more available for your skin to soak up.
Furthermore, the “water”, when blended with oils and humectants actually creates the luscious, creamy texture we love in a nice lotion or cream.
But! We do have other options here! Instead of plain old water we can use water like ingredients; namely, Aloe juice and steam distilled hydrosol. These water-like ingredients are the foundation of all my lotions, creams and moisturizers and offer additional benefits above and beyond skin hydration (moisture), they help sooth irritation and they feed our skin with diverse plant nutrients. So, don’t fall for the increasingly common myth that the water as an unnecessary filler.
Wild Harvested Cold Water Marine Seaweed extracts: They are anti-bacterial, anti-cancerous, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative, and there’s evidence they’re able to protect skin from sun damage. They’re proven to help accelerate regeneration of damaged cells, enhance wound healing, reduce scar formation, prevent premature aging and revitalize rough, parched skin, prevent the breakdown of elastin and collagen and to stimulate formation of new fibroblasts and collagen. They have immune modulating effects; stimulating the skin to produce keratinocytes when exposed to UV radiation and pollution. Keratinocytes serve as a barrier from the environment, preventing invasion by toxins and pathogens.
Wild Willow Bark infused glycerite: Willow Bark is considered a safe, natural alternative to salicylic acid. It’s anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial, helping reduce redness, itch and scaring, and protects skin from pathogens. It can calm skin irritation, reduce the size of closed comedones and prevent clogged pores. Infused into vegetable glycerin. Naturally derived glycerin from plant sources and incorporated into our skin care is truly one of nature’s miracles for our skin!
Do not believe ANYTHING you hear otherwise! And visit my blog post where I debunk silly myths! Glycerin: One of Nature’s Miracles, or something else?

Glycerin is a powerful humectant, a purified form from plants and has been used to soften, smooth and moisturize skin for a very long time. It is hygroscopic and able to mimic the skin's NMFs. Glycerine in skin care brings yet another moisture grabbing ingredient - making a total of 3 powerful humectants in your Dew Drops. Glycerin is a naturally occurring moisturizing component (NMF) present abundantly in healthy skin. We start out in life with a lot of it ... and experience it's decline as we age.
Powerful medicine can be created by infusing medicinal plants into glycerine. The plant compounds are extracted into to the glycerine by simply covering the plant material with glycerine and allowing time for the compounds to be extracted. It's that simple. We call these Glycerites and they are used mostly for creating herbal remedies. The use of glycerites in skin care is not very common but they hold great promise for addressing many acute and chronic skin disorders by delivering healing plant compounds along with moisture. White willow bark is one of the richest sources of naturally occurring Salicin, precursor to salicylic acid. So in addition to the added moisture, White Willow Bark glycerite enhances the Dew Drops with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, helping help reduce redness, itch and scaring. It can calm skin irritations, reduce the size of closed comedones and prevent clogged pores.
Skin Identical Ceramide Complex: Ceramides are basically skin cell glue! They are a naturally occurring NMF produced by the skin which keeps our moisture barrier intact and healthy. A healthy skin barrier seals in dermal moisture and seals out harmful environmental elements, allergens, and parthenogenic microbes. Ceramides and hyaluronic acid work together to improve the look, feel and health of our skin. Hyaluronic Acid plumps up the cells with dermal moisture and ceramides help lock it in.

I include a skin-identical lipid concentrate shown to enhanced skin moisturization and protection.
It’s a multi-lamellar (membrane) system of vegetable-derived ceramides, free fatty acids, Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate, phytosphingosine and cholesterol.
It helps restore the barrier function of the Stratum Corneum. With regular use it can reduce sensitives and parched, dehydrated skin. It will not clog pores and is excellent for those with atopic dermatitis, acne, and parched dehydrated skin.
HA Multiplex combines 5 types of Hyaluronic Acid: One of the top “can’t live without” ingredients, HA draws moisture into skin cells plumping them up. It helps smooth and soften skin, helps restore elasticity and retain moisture. It’s also shown to prevent penetration by pollution, toxins, and harmful bacteria. Here’s the breakdown of what each of the different weights (MA) of HA bring to a formula:
high MW hydrates the skin, improves skin barrier function, and leaves dry skin feeling soothed and moisturized.
Mid MW penetrates deeper into the stratum corneum and promotes protection of the skin's natural moisturizing factor - helping to restore moisture where it is most needed-
Low MW penetrates deeper into the epidermis to induce production of your skin's own native hyaluronic acid, and aiding in skin cell turnover.
-
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is one of our precious Natural Moisturizing Factors made by our own skin! HA is a naturally occurring, structural component of collagen - it protects the structure of our skin cells by forming "water cushions" between them. Babies have a lot of it - it's what makes their skin so darn plump, supple, and smooth to the touch. HA naturally declines as we age. Wrinkles, lines, and sunspots appear. The skin becomes less elastic and less soft to the touch. It becomes thinner and more easily damaged. HA is also available in purified form in 5 different molecular weights (medium, low, oligo, high and very high) HA Multiplex combines all 5 naturally occurring NMFs and is produced through microbial fermentation. HA Multiplex delivers moisture deep into your skin, helping it stay hydrated throughout the day.
Wild Carrot Seed, Frankincense, Helichrysum (aka the great healer). The list of benefits from these 4 essential oils is long indeed. Of note is the synergy created which offers protection to cells from solar damage, support for aging and acne prone skin, and antifungal and antibacterial compounds provide healing properties known to benefit atopic dermatitis (eczema, seborrheic dermatitis) Carrot seed oil is a powerful anti-aging ingredient steam distilled from the seed of the the wildflower commonly known as Queen Anne's Lace (Daucus carota).
Causes of skin damage:
The number one natural cause of facial skin damage is over exposure to the sun. PLEASE wear sunscreen everyday, even indoors. (Our faces are terrible solar panels, you get ZERO vitamin D from the sun on your face, just sun damage, even through windows!)
The second major cause is the cumulative effects of our modern lifestyles - the stripping of Natural Moisture Factors and skin oils (over cleansing, use of synthetic ingredients and rancid products, harsh chemical peels and treatments, over exposure to synthetic fragrances, and the list goes on.)
Number 3: stress: physical, emotional and environmental.
Adopting safe practices, simplifying our routines, and choosing just a few, super fresh, skin care products which support skin's biology and chemistry will help us to reconcile our modern lifestyles and our skin's needs. Adapting nourishing skin care traditions in novel ways, and by wisely bringing modern science and technology to bear we can help support strong resilient skin, able to be withstand the ravages of the environment, lifestyles and time, AND resolve skin issues with some simple changes to our routines.
And finally … no discussion about healthy skin care is complete without touching on 2 of the most important aspects of my artisan skin care …
FRESH MATTERS - A LOT!
Freshness in our skin care is absolutely VITAL! We know that fresh food is more nutritious - it’s the same for the stuff we put on our skin. But the big brands can touch this subject, because they simply cannot offer you truly fresh products.
Big brands CAN NOT offer you fresh skin care - period.
I craft all of my product is teeny tiny batches of 10-20 at a time. This ensure optimal freshness. Dew Drops is best used within 6 months of the batch date on the label, and I include this use by date on each jar.
CLEAN SKIN CARE
To honor our desire for “clean” skincare - I do not over preserve my formulas. I include just enough plant derived, biodegradable preservatives to maintain the stability of the ingredients, not a drop more. What does this mean? Please be mindful that the user can contaminate the contents more easily than a “conventional product”. Conventional cosmetics are “over preserved” to account for your behaviors!
So, keep the lid on tight, use clean fingers to extract product, and use it up by the date shown.
