Coniferous Tree Oleoresins. Coniferous tree species all produce medicinal resin. Oleoresins are very complex and differ from species to species. They are comprised of intricate mixtures of volatile and nonvolatile terpenes. Oleoresins are shown to be antibacterial and possess antitumor properties. They are also Antiseptic, Astringent, Antimicrobial, Antifungal, Anticancer, and anti-inflammatory.
Tree sap, pitch, and resins are different compounds produced by the tree. The oleoresin is produced in response to injury - oozing out from deep inside the tree to cover wounds made by bugs and animals, and scars left by broken branches. The resin forms a scab, covering and healing the wound. The properties that contribute to the trees’ healing help us heal, too - what heals the tree can help our wounds heal, too.
Pine tree resins have anti-cancer properties similar to Frankincense resins but have not been as widely studied to date. More research is currently underway to investigate these compounds.
Boswellic Rich Frankincense Resin. Boswellic acids are compounds in Frankincense resins containing “pentacyclic triterpenes.” These terpenes have been intensely studied for their powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer activities. The essential oils from Frankincense have powerful qualities of their own, but it’s within the resin where the anticancer properties reside. Calendula Blossoms. Calendula is well known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties and has been used for thousands of years, helping skin heal from wounds, rashes, eczema, itchy dermatitis, and eczema. It grows like mad in my garden, where I collect it every day in the summer for my infusions.
Yarrow leaves and flowers. Native Americans used yarrows extensively for many purposes. I include them here to help resolve bruises, minor sprains, and swelling and to relieve itches and rashes.
Arnica petals. Arnica has been used for thousands of years to soothe sore muscles, sprains, and bruises, reduce inflammation, and heal wounds.
Cottonwood Buds are rich in a compound called Salicin, the precursor to Salicylic Acid, which is the active ingredient in aspirin. You may be familiar with White Willow Bark - also a source of this natural, anti-inflammatory compound. I collect my Cottonwood buds after the spring equinox - when the saps start to rise, and the sticky red-orange Salicin-rich resin has saturated the leaf and catkin buds. Salicin reduces pain and inflammation. LEARN MORE
